40 days without what?

Friday, February 15, 2013

Oh that lovely Lenten season is among us yet again. A time to sacrifice, which for some means giving up a guilty pleasure, and for some means enhancing life by promising to do something good for these 40 days. This year I decided I needed both in my life. Things to nix: beer and french fries. Thing to add: praying every single day. No exceptions.

Not that indulging in beer and french fries puts me at odds with my religion, but it will be a test of my self-control. Beer, with its convenience and low price tag during basketball season (not to mention the green kind on St. Patty's Day) will be difficult to say no to. I guess this will make my red wine habit even more ridiculous.

When dining out, I never opt for a healthier option when french fries are the standard side with a pub sandwich or burger. Don't even get me started on how much I'm going to miss dipping them in a variety of condiments. In case you're curious and didn't give up fries for Lent, Blanc Burgers has my very favorite sauce. I crave the spicy tanginess of their orange dip. OK I need to stop talking about this, it's 10am on the third day of Lent and I'm driving myself crazy writing this paragraph.

What are you giving up, or adding, this Lent?

tickled

Over the past few years, pink has crept into my color wheelhouse.
I am a major neutral girl, you see. And as a redhead, pink was always one of those no-no colors (along with most any "warm" shades). So Molly Ringwald wore it and looked pretty darn good doing so, but it's just not a color I can pull off.

Although I don't wear it, pink has snuck its way into my life through other avenues. I love it on lips, nails, and purses, but I especially adore it as an accent color in decor.

How I would love to use pink.
How I actually use pink.
How do you wear/decorate/accessorize pink?
Oh, and Happy Valentine's, friends. I hope it's your best one yet.

Happy almost heart day.
These kiddos are sure to get you in the spirit, even if you are in the anti camp for this holiday. You can count me on the pro side, for the video and for Valentine's Day.

PS: If I'm going to have a ginger child someday, I want her to be just like the hilarious fur-coat-loving, leopard-wearing girlfriend in the video. I die.

resolute

Monday, December 31, 2012

It's snowing again today. The big, fluffy kind of snowflakes perfect for getting stuck on tongues. I'm off work yet again, so I've had a lot of time to think about my 2012 resolutions and what I want to make a priority in 2013. I've also had far too much time to think about what I'm wearing tonight.

A quick look at my 2012 resolutions shows I did mediocre at best this year.
1. Learn Spanish: #fail.
2. Work out three times a week: got much better at this after joining Woodside in June.
3. Go to church: I went, but certainly not every week.
4. Eat more veggies: this got better with joining Woodside, although I still indulge in cheeseburgers and fries enough to stay happy and sane.
5. Read 12 books: the final count, assuming I finish Life of Pi today, will be 6 complete books and 4 halves. Dangit.

But I must say this year was a wonderful one, full of travel, friends, an amazing football season, and life-changing experiences. So this year, on top of keeping up with #2-5 from above, I have set the following resolutions, which are more about life enhancements than restrictions.

In 2013 I will....

1. Reserve more moments for quiet mindedness. This could be prayer, reading, or meditation, but time with a screen in front of my face does not count.
2. Participate in more dance parties.
3. Take a cooking class.
4. See more live music. This past year I saw some great shows (Foster the People, Jason Mraz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Old Crow Medicine Show) but there's always room for improvement.
5. Distance myself from negative people.
6. Save money for a DSLR camera, buy one, take a class or two, and use it.

Happy New Year's Eve! I hope you have a wonderful night with lots of champagne and sparkles.

a day for firsts

Sunday, December 23, 2012

Good Christmas Eve eve morning!
I'm currently waking up in a Marriott in Chicago after seeing Book of Mormon.

So I have some news.....
My guest post cherry has been popped.
I'm sure you wanted to know that this morning, right?
You can check it out at my friend Rachael's amazing blog, for the love of design.
She's one of my favorite bloggers, and we just so happen to be a sorority sisters from our K-State days.

Speaking of K-State, this video is a must watch for the holidays.
I'd be lying if I told you I don't tear up every time I watch it.

Now, onward ho to my first trip to Wisconsin!

Merry Christmas, everyone.

dear santa

Friday, December 21, 2012

Dear Santa,

How are you? I know this is your busy season and all, but I was hoping one of your elves could read this letter to you before you pack up the sleigh for good and start your chimney plunging in New Zealand. It's my understanding (which is very poor when it comes to geography) that New Zealand is the first place a new day starts, due to the International Date Line. So those little New Zealand kids get their presents hours before everyone else... luckies.

I was very happy to wake up today. The world didn't end this morning, so the Mayans were wrong which is great news. I should clarify that I didn't wake up "very happy". That NEVER happens, unless I wake up at 10am. But now that I've been up for a few hours and had one gingerbread latte, things are looking good.

This year, my name should be on the nice list. If that's the case, I still really want a puppy. I know, it's been on my list for the past 16 years and there's never been a puppy under the tree. Maybe it's because your elves can't make puppies in their workshop? If that's the case, I have a great solution for you. There's a nice little shelter just down the road from my place, where I'm sure it would be OK for you to make a pit stop to pick up an orphan pup before heading over to my roof. If that is not in the budget this Christmas, I figure persistence will lead to a puppy one of these years....

pleeeeeeeaasssseeee.

Other than that, I just really want a safe holiday weekend. My family of four will be touring the upper Midwest (brr) the next four days. I must say, this is not nearly as exciting to me compared to how the fam spent last Christmas. Wow, I used to have a lot of exclamation points in my posts. Yikes. Sorry about that. I will miss Blue Eyes like crazy while we're away, but I'm sure the family will figure out something to pass the time in the car quickly. If it comes down to it, I plan on singing Justin Bieber at the top of my lungs until Dad lets me drive so we can go 20 mph faster. I'm excited to add another state to the "visited" category on my bucket list while we embark on this holiday road trip: Wisconsin. I plan on eating lots of cheese and playing in the snow with my cousins while we're there. I hope they're not too old and cool for that.

I feel like you have a pretty good relationship with Jesus and God, so if you could give them a heartfelt thank you from me, that would be awesome. It's been a very good year. Even with it being a great year, I failed at all of my new year's resolutions, so I have that to work towards in 2013.

Well I think that's all from me this year. I hope you enjoy lots of cookies and milk this Christmas Eve.

Love, Monica

PS: I'm being serious about the puppy. :)

change of scenery

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Kansas Citians woke up to white today.
The commute was twice as long and about four times as stressful, but I love the first snowfall of the season.

In the spirit of change, this little corner of the interwebs received a face lift this morning as well.
I'm pretty happy with the new layout so far.
It's simpler, cleaner, and I think it is more appealing to the naked eye.
I need to reformat almost all of my previous posts, so bear with me as I make tweaks to the new design.
I sure hope you like it, too. What do you guys think?
PS: if you're using Google Reader, click here to see the changes.

brown paper packages

Monday, December 17, 2012

Last week, my high school friends got together for our second annual ornament and nail polish exchange.
This year we decided to have it at one of our houses instead of at a restaurant, since we are known to linger at the dinner table far longer than any server appreciates.

There was decadent Mac n Cheese - thank you Hillary!
(Seriously, you'll want to make this recipe asap. So. Good.)
The Christmas decor would make Martha Stewart jealous.
The ornaments and nail polish colors were top notch this year.

And then there was the gift I brought, which was later dubbed the "humping Santa".

At least I could be proud of the packaging.

Christmas spirit

Monday, December 10, 2012

I had a long post drafted last week about the Christmas spirit, and how I hadn't been feeling Christmas-y yet this season. When I went to post today, I realized none of that was true anymore.

After work on Friday, I ran to the Plaza to exchange a top at H&M. If you're not familiar with the Kansas City area, the Plaza is our city's pride and joy at Christmastime.
While the Plaza is a very nice area, it naturally attracts the less fortunate, who sit on the sidewalks asking for money. I was walking out of H&M when I saw an older lady in a wheelchair with a sign asking for donations about 15 feet in the direction opposite of my car. I started to turn towards the parking garage when I saw a well-dressed older man and his wife stop and talk with the woman in need. They had a lively chat of a minute or so before he handed her a 20 dollar bill and continued towards me. The woman in the wheelchair was glowing. Yes, I was just standing there, watching her happiness unfold.
I know this sort of thing happens often, but for some reason that was the trigger that sent me in to full-blown Christmas spirit. I walked to my car literally smiling I was so happy to have witnessed that random act of kindness.

From that point on, my cheery Christmas mood was catapulted in to overdrive with all of the fun festivities of the weekend.

It was busy. It was fun. It was really festive.
Bring on the cold and snow and holiday music. I'm ready now.

happy halloween

Happy Halloween!
Although this is usually a holiday I enjoy celebrating, I dropped the ball this year. No pumpkin carving decorating, no costume parties, no candy. This whole Halloween-is-on-a-Wednesday thing is for the birds.

So tonight, I'm looking forward to sitting on the couch with a glass or two of red wine and the start of my Mexico packing list.

Instead of celebrating Halloween early this past Saturday, I crossed off another item on my bucket list.
More on that in the following days.

Did you dress up last weekend? Please share your costumes if you did, I can always use ideas for next year!

style inspiration: 4th of july

Monday, July 2, 2012

It's almost the 4th of July! Here's what is getting me in the mindset for a fun Wednesday night and weekend celebration.
4th of July
shirt // shorts // TOMS // tote // photo
Couple things:

1. How much fun is that girl having on the back of the motorcycle? I wish I looked that cool when I was on a Harley...
all i needed was an American flag...
2. I really don't like jorts. At all. I know, they're kind of an American classic but I've seen too many pairs gone wrong. However the ones above are all sorts of right. The pockets hanging out of the bottom are a little, um, promiscuous for my normal taste level but when it's the 4th of July, anything goes.
3. I need those TOMS for this weekend stat.

tradition

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Something to know about my family: we LOVE the 4th of July. Like so much that I was the Statue of Liberty and my brother was Uncle Sam one year for Halloween. Side note: find that picture and post it.

When I was younger, the annual celebration of the red white and blue included a flag cake (like this one, but where you see fruit, substitute more icing), silly old school Americana music blaring throughout the house, and a neighborhood firework show in the middle of the street. The master of ceremonies (aka man with the lighter) was my Dad who had a special "fireworks" outfit. (Again, wishing Facebook was around in the early '90s so I could quickly find a picture of said outfit.) Some years we'd even have a shaving cream party and run around in the sprinklers afterwards. Is this normal? It was for me.

When my parents bought a lake house in 1997, we started a new tradition of celebrating the 4th of July at the Ozarks. The first four years we would invite family members or a small group of family friends. Then in 2001 my parents had the brilliant idea of inviting three families that would change what the 4th of July means to me for good. It's still a holiday spent focusing on celebrating this country I'm a big fan of, but for our families, it's also a holiday rich in tradition.

What kinds of rich traditions? Let me enlighten you....

The first night dance party

Healthy eating

Family competitions

An occasional alcoholic beverage

You didn't really think I'd write two sappy essay-posts in one week, did you?

Love these families, love the memories, and love celebrating America! Thanks to these two for getting the party started back in 2001, I can't wait for this year!

What is your 4th of July celebration like? Do we share any of the same traditions?

weekend inspiration: green

Friday, March 16, 2012

Happy almost St. Patrick's day! As a red head that pretends to have Irish lineage, I LOVE this holiday! And I truly don't think green gets enough attention in the fashion and interior design world. It is my second favorite color (second only to purple) and has some seriously gorgeous shades in its color wheel.

If you watched 30 Rock last night, you saw Jenna Maroney rock one amazingly monochromatic emerald ensemble. I'm sad to say I can't find an image of it yet on the internets, so hopefully you have it saved on your DVR. She looked glamazing.

Depending on the time of the K-State game tomorrow (Go Cats!) I will be heading out to the St. Patty's Day parade in historical Westport in both green AND purple, which is.... wait for it..... also one of my favorite color combinations! Not Barney the dinosaur purple and green, more like this:

via
Here's where I give lots of love to the beautiful shades of green that should be more prevalent in design and style. Please, out with the pink that clashes with my skin tone and hair, and in with the green! Who's with me?

Enjoy the visual feast, I'm off to imbibe in pre-celebration of St. Patty's!

valentine's cookies

Friday, February 24, 2012

Happy Friday readers! Remember when I said back here that I was making Valentine's Day sugar cookies with my friend? Well that happened, but ditzo here forgot to write down the recipe! I will update this as soon as I get the recipe so everyone can enjoy slaving over these yummy cookies next year. I say slaving, but it was actually really fun. Stasia had the dough pretty much all made by the time I got there, so I started here, with rolling and cutting it out!

In very specific quantities, here's what you'll need:
Dough:
1. A bunch of granulated sugar.
2. Many, many sticks of Land O Lakes salted butter
3.  Flour. Lots of it.
4. Probably eggs? I'm obviously rewriting this for you when I get the real recipe.
Icing:
1. About 12 pounds of powdered sugar (you wish I was kidding.....)
2. Almond flavoring
4. Vanilla extract, get the clear kind so it doesn't tint your dough
5. Meringue Powder. I didn't even know this stuff existed before, but it's a sub for egg whites.
6. Butter flavoring
7. Water. The only semi-healthy ingredient you'll see all day.

Once the dough has chilled, been rolled out and cut, you'll stick them on an ungreased cookie sheet for 7 1/2 minutes at 375 degrees. Then roll, cut, repeat!

By the time we got through all the dough Stasia had prepared, we had made 225 cookies. WTF. It was awesome. Cookies were taking over her gigantic kitchen.

Now on to the icing. The key is to make two types with different consistencies from the same batch. Start with making the "piping" icing. This is the thicker of the two that you'll use for the outline of the cookies and any words, polka dots, or other details you want to add.

Once you've got the icing to the color you want, pour half of it in to an icing bag with a medium-sized tip. Then add more water to the rest of the icing in the bowl. This half will become your filler icing, use it after you've outlined the cookies with the piping icing. Pour the filler in to another icing bag with a smaller tip. See what I'm saying? Two different consistencies, same great color. That's the secret. Repeat until you've made all the colors of icing you want. Keep the bags of icing setting in cups (we used red beer pong cups) so the icing doesn't spill all over the place.

Next, you decorate! Don't forget to outline with the piping, then fill with the thinner icing. Wait for the filler to dry if you want to write something (like those rose buds or the big "A"). If you want to make pretty designs (like the chevron-ish lines or the Salvador Dali hearts), don't wait for the filler to dry, hurry up and pick up a different color filler and get to work with a toothpick!

And voila! At the end you have some beautiful cookies and a hand cramp! And they'll be so pretty that no one will believe you made them yourself. All your valentines will be delighted when you show up at their door with these treats. And your co-workers will love you forever.

Thank you Stasia for teaching me how bake and decorate these delicious sugar cookies! Can't wait until next year!
